We're pleased to have been able to speak to Lucy Carlton, one of the designers at Disaster Designs, about her latest collection - Hola

Hola by Disaster Designs

Take a bow Lucy, we love the Hola range.

Thank you, I'm glad you like it

Can you tell us a bit about yourself, how long have you been working at Disaster Designs?

I've been working here at Disaster for just over a year and a half now. Prior to that I worked in New York as a print designer and on a variety of freelance projects. I love Interior design and David Beckham!

Working in New York must have been exciting, what did you do over there?

It was amazing! I went straight after uni for 2 years and worked as a print designer for a well established studio out there.

If you could give one insiders tip for someone visiting the Big Apple, what would it be? Maybe the best place to shop, eat or visit.

Soho for High street shopping and the lower east side / Williamsburg, Brooklyn for vintage and boutique shops. ‘Peep’ was my favourite place to eat on 177 Prince st, Soho. Amazing Thai food, cocktails and toilets!

How would you describe the Hola range?

It’s quite a graphic look with a modern colour palette and floral twist.

What is the process that turns an idea into a final product?

Well, usually I start by putting together a lot of research from various sources and start drawing. I tend to sketch things out first before doing anything on screen. After scanning everything in, I would begin putting different prints together. Once I have a clearer idea in my mind about the overall look I would then mock the idea up onto a bag shape and take it from there.

Does the research lead to an idea, or do you usually have something in mind at the start?

It varies really. Sometimes a single image from researching can spark off a whole range. So far I think I have always had a little idea before I start.

If you could only own one of the products from your Hola range, what would it be and why?

I already own the Hola bird wallet. I really like the colours in the print and prefer the black PVC compared with a lot of brown PVC which is usually used.

What does functionable mean?

Very Funny!!!!! Go Red team.

We should probably clear that up. Lucy recently appeared on the BBC show Bargain Hunt with her other half, and coined the phrase "functionable" instead of functional - and despite begging, the producers kept it in.

What is your favourite flavour of ice-cream?

Erm... Chocolate

What are you currently working on (unless you're sworn to secrecy)?

I'm presently working on an embroidery themed range. I can't give too much away of course, it's early days but I'm loving the idea of playing with the different textures and stitched elements.
