When we heard that Spongebob Squarepants was strutting his stuff on a Milan catwalk, we had to take a closer look at the latest kitsch x fashion crossover.
Spongebob has flirted with high fashion before. Marc Jacobs has the yellow cartoon character permanently inked on his arm, but nothing could quite prepare us for Moschino's latest collection, the first full collection from American designer Jeremy Scott.
The catwalk show was big, bold and borrowed heavily from American mass culture. Models sauntered down the catwalk wrapped up in McDonalds inspired red and yellow pieces, with an 'M' motif that must surely have trademark lawyers flinching. We loved the sunglasses which could've come out of a $1000 Happy meal box, and handbags, one a large soda container, the other a brilliant red McNugget box. The pop-cultre and consumerism influence wasn't finished though, as large prom dresses and gowns featuring prominent Budweiser, Hersheys and Froot Loops were also unveiled. 'Fast Fashion' indeed.
And then there was Spongebob.
The animated character from Bikini Bottom got his big moment in the spotlight in front of Katy Perry no less. Sweaters, coats and trousers all got the Spongebob treatment, his face plastered across them in a variety of garish gurns. Whilst Spongebob isn't our favourite cartoon creation, we loved seeing something so unashamedly tongue-in-cheek up there, loud and proud, mixing it up with the best of the fashion world.
One thing is for sure, their Autumn/Winter 14 collection will certanly be divisive and not to everyone's taste, but everybody is talking about Moschino, and you have to think that is exactly what Jeremy Scott had set out to do. We love to see fashion not taking itself so seriously, especially on the catwalk, and there were certainly some fab accessories that would translate to street style on show.
One more thing - did anybody spot Karl Lagerfield's mini-me at the Fendi show? Cara Delevigne was clutching mini Karl as she strode down the catwalk.
